A GHG verification is a type of independent quality assurance that assesses the following:

  • the accuracy and completeness of GHG data;
  • the reliability of the procedures and controls that are in place to manage the data;
  • the adherence to a specific set of criteria (such as an ISO 14064 standard).

The Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) has been very influential in advancing the demand for GHG verifications by awarding increased scoring to reporting companies for undergoing third-party verification of their GHG emission data. In addition, the CDP has made it a mandatory requirement for companies that want to be listed on their annual Disclosure and Performance Leadership Indices to have had their GHG emissions data verified by a third party.

Organizations that are considering investing in a verification of their GHG data can take steps to ensure the process runs smoothly. First, it is strongly advised to have a documented set of quality control procedures pertaining to your organization’s GHG management. Second, it is imperative that the requisite data that will be reviewed in the verification be well-organized and made available to the verification team. Much valuable time is often wasted by verifiers in trying to track down missing data or make sense of data that is not well managed.
